Casa Vinicola Luca is a deep-rooted family business with a rich history that has not been without its challenges. The recent history of this family has been particularly trying. The Soviet regime stripped them of all their possessions and forced a large part of the family to do hard labor in Siberia. Only great-grandfather Petru escaped this deportation, because he happened to be in the vineyard on that fateful night and had to stay there for several days to complete the work due to the lack of a car at the time. The vineyard was his salvation. Upon his return, he found that his house had been taken over by Soviet officers, instead of his loved ones. He fought to get his family back home and was largely successful in convincing the regime that they were not “class enemies” or “traitors to the fatherland”. Upon their return, they were given a barn, where they had previously kept their farming tools and vineyard supplies. There they continued their lives. Grandfather Grigore kept up the tradition and produced wine throughout his life, albeit under restrictive circumstances, as private ownership was not allowed at the time and entrepreneurship was forbidden.

The Perestroika period found father Ion employed at one of the largest wine cellars in the country, called Cricova. There he worked together with his son Vasile and created some of the most acclaimed wines of Moldova. Son Ion continued the family tradition and after numerous international travels decided to give back what was once taken away from them by the Soviet regime: the possibility to produce wine under their own name – Casa Vinicola Luca. In 2014 they introduced the CARPE DIEM wine series, which consists mainly of indigenous grape varieties, but also includes some international varieties. Success was not long in coming. Every year Carpe Diem wines are praised at numerous national and international competitions, and for many years they have held the status of the most awarded small wine producer in Moldova.
