Château Musar Gaston Hochar Blanc is a unique white wine. It has a French character, despite the use of its own unique grape varieties such as Obaideh (the local variant of Chardonnay) and Merwah, a grape that is somewhat similar to Sémillon. It is especially reminiscent of an aged white Graves, due to its dry, rich, almost honey-like character. The grapes are harvested from bush vines, with yields of no more than 10 to 20 hectoliters per hectare. The vineyards are partly located at high altitudes, up to 1400 meters, on the slopes of Mount Lebanon. In combination with the perfectly ripe grapes, this gives the white wine enormous richness and aromatic power, balanced by beautiful acids and bitters. The white wine undergoes maturation in oak barrels from the Nevers region for nine months. It is then kept in the bottle for no less than seven years until it is marketed. This makes this a special white wine with an alcohol content of 12% with a unique, beautifully matured character.
Château Musar Gaston Hochar Blanc turns beautifully yellow in the glass and is beautifully ripe and developed in the mouth, wonderfully honeyed and rich, mango, nuts, wonderfully exotic, intense, with a bitter finish. This beauty goes perfectly with fish dishes or pasta dishes with fragrant mushrooms. Drink this Lebanese white wine at a temperature of 15°C.
Château Musar is perhaps the only winery in Asia that is a household name. The calling card is how exceptionally well the wines of this winery can age and equally impressive is how the winery managed to make quality wines during 15 years of civil war in Lebanon, which finally ended in 1992. The vineyards are located in the Bekaa Valley, which is actually is more of a plateau than a valley, but due to its elevated position, which reaches 1000 meters in places, the heat is not nearly as oppressive as you might initially think.
The winery was founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, whose ancestors had arrived from France in the 12th century, and is now run by his grandsons. However, it was Gaston's son, Serge, who made the winery famous and championed the wines of Lebanon during the turbulent times of the 1970s until his death in 2014.
