Compass Box, the London-based independent bottler and whiskey maker of ethereal Scottish blends and blended malts, traditionally sources its whiskeys from Scotland's long-standing historic distilleries. In June 2023, they broke with that tradition by collaborating with Bimber Distillery, a small craft distillery from West London. The result is a blend that is groundbreaking in the field of independent bottling.
Together, the West London neighbors launched two expressions of their collaboration. The recipe for both releases is 60 percent peated whiskey and 40 percent unpeated whiskey from ex-sherry casks. Compass Box Duality is a stylish, limited-edition marriage between Islay's Ardbeg (with a “ teaspoon ” of Caol Ila) and a Pedro Ximenez-matured malt whiskey from Bimber. It is also the first time that Compass Box has sourced a whiskey that does not come from Scotland.
“ The whiskey landscape around the world has changed enormously since Compass Box began in 2000 ,” says the erudite American John Glaser, founder of Compass Box. “ A whole new league of producers has emerged who want to do things their own way. They do this on a scale that allows them to follow their own beliefs and passions. As blenders, we really want to work with anyone who produces great whisky, of any size, anywhere. ”
“ The overarching idea of Duality is to combine heavy peat with sherry casks,” continues Glaser. “The Compass Box expression is heavier simply due to the stronger phenolic character of our peated component compared to Bimber's. However, the principles of rich texture and aromatic expressiveness are common to both releases. ”.
Nose: Starts with peaty smoke and salted caramel. This is followed by aromas of ripe mango and sweet honey.
Taste: Mouth-filling. Rich and complex with strong peat smoke and juicy raisins followed by fudge, sea salt and ripe tropical fruits.
Finish: A full finish that lasts a long time. The peat fades away and gives way to honey, mango and raisins.
