Glen Scotia Double Cask is a classic Campbeltown malt with a great history of whisky making since 1832. Finished in a combination of new bourbon casks, followed by Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, the combination creates this remarkable malt whisky, with a perfect balance of full bodied spicy fruits, beneath a layer of the signature sea spray and vanilla oak finish that Glen Scotia is famous for.
Nose:
Amber. Very sweet. Initially it's all crème caramel, caramelized fruit sugars, wood sugar, toffee and fudge, before some apple and peach come through. Over time a smoky note of bourbon with a pleasant dusty dryness. That's a bit powerful.
Taste:
Sweet start, quite fat and although the alcohol provides a tingling buzz on the tongue, the result is a good mid-palate weight. The dry distillate character is still there, but some depth is added. Water brings out the different elements a bit more, but also adds dried mint.
Finish:
Deep and dark.
The Loch Lomond Group (LLG) includes the two active distilleries Glen Scotia and Loch Lomond. In addition, LLG also holds the stock of the prestigious closed distillery Littlemill. This makes the history of LLG's brands one of the oldest in the Scottish whisky industry. The company's brands are characterised by the typical identity of the regions where the various whiskies come from.
In the glorious Victorian era, the whisky region of Campbeltown was the epicentre of the whisky industry in Scotland. At that time, there were no less than 30 distilleries in the region. However, much has changed over the years and many distilleries on the peninsula have closed. The closure of many distilleries in combination with the small supply and high demand has led to a shortage of the whisky with the salty nose. Campbeltown is an isolated place, far from civilization and unique compared to other areas in Scotland. The whisky distilled here is in turn also unique and not comparable to whiskies from Speyside, Highlands, Islay or the Lowlands. Despite the fact that there are currently only a few distilleries active in Campeltown, the style is idiosyncratic and has a unique and individual character. Due to its uniqueness, the Campbeltown region is classified as one of the 5 regions of Scotland. Each region has its own specific character traits and so does the whisky from the Campbeltown peninsula, where only three distilleries are currently active.
Glen Scotia, founded in 1832, is one of those three distilleries. It is also one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland. The craftsmanship and love for the water of life is still noticeable at Glen Scotia. Each cask is still selected and tested by the Master Blender, John Peterson. The Glen Scotia distillery is still in almost the same condition as it was in the 19th century when the then owner Duncan MacCallum refurbished the distillery. An idyllic place that makes many a whisky lover's heart beat faster.
