DO Rueda is at about 800 elevation with long cold winters, short spring and fall times and hot summers. The temperature difference between day and night ensures a good balance between sugar in the grape (day) and sufficient freshness (night). Cuatro Rayas was founded in 1935 and produces about 20% of all bottled wines from the Rueda area. The first 30 cm of the soil of the vineyards consists mainly of pebbles and sand. The slightly lower layers contain a lot of loam. Cuatro Rayas itself has a centuries-old vineyard. This is a particularly valuable asset, as in Europe many of the old vines have been lost to phylloxera. The Bitacora is a light and delicate wine. It is made from 100% Verdejo grapes.
