The BenRiach distillery was founded in 1898 by John Duff, near the Longmorn distillery which was also owned by John at the time. The distilleries were connected by a private railway with a steam locomotive called the Puggy. This was used to transport coal, malt, peat and barrels back and forth. Soon after the railway was established in 1900, production ceased in the aftermath of the bankruptcy of Pattison's whisky, a major Scotch whiskey buyer at the time. Only BenRiach maltings remained in active use, producing for Longmorn. It was not until 1965 that a spirit was produced again when the distillery was reopened by Glenlivet Distillers Ltd. In 1978 the distillery had a new owner, this time Seagrams. Seagrams subsequently became part of Pernod Ricard in 2001 and during this period the BenRiach distillery only operated for three months of the year. In 2004, the distillery was acquired by an independent consortium, the BenRiach Distillery Company Limited.
In 2011 the distillery won two awards at the International Wine & Spirit Competition. They produce three styles of whisky, unpeated, Highlands peated and triple distilled. These are then left to mature in different types of barrels. Master Blender Rachel Barrie continues the tradition of exploring all possible flavors and combinations for their single malt.
