Kyoto Miyako Distillery

Kyoto Miyako Distillery is the first whisky distillery in Kyoto, located in Kyotamba-Cho and surrounded by the beautiful nature that is a vital part of Kyoto Prefecture. Not far from the distillery you will find the Yura River which is known as a great spot for fishing for Ayu sweetfish.

In the distillery we find two types of pot still. The straight head type and the bulge type. The straight head type makes spirit with a relatively bold combination of flavors where the bulge type produces a beautiful and smooth spirit. By using different types of pot stills the range of whiskies is constantly expanding.

Because this location is surrounded by mountains such as Mt. Chorogatake, there is a large difference in temperature between day and night. This temperature difference accelerates the aging process of the whisky according to the distillery and is an irreplaceable step in making the whiskies of the Kyoto Miyako Distillery.

In this product you will also find another ancient art from Kyoto, ” Nishijin-Ori ” is used as the label. And the label is used as obi to create an elegant and beautiful design. This type of woven label comes from the Heian-Kyo era, more than 1200 years ago. Nishijin-ori is a generic term used for dyed yarns that are woven into high quality products in Kyoto, and these are produced in large variety but in small volumes. The fabric used feels very soft. This craftsmanship is developed in this region and is famous not only in Kyoto but all over the world as a silky product that represents Japan.

Only 600 bottles of this whisky were produced. The typical delicate character of Kyoto whisky is nicely complemented by the sweet spiciness that the wine barrels have given. The barrels are from a local Japanese winemaker.
