Kyoto Miyako Distillery

The Kyoto Miyako Distillery is the first whiskey distillery in Kyoto, located in Kyotamba-Cho and surrounded by the beautiful nature that is a vital part of Kyoto Prefecture. Not far from the distillery you will find the Yura River which is known as a great place for fishing for Ayu sweetfish.

In the distillery we find two types of pot still. The straight head type and the bulge type. The straight head type makes spirit with a relatively bold combination of flavors where the bulge type produces a beautiful and smooth spirit. By using different types of pot stills, the range of whiskeys continues to expand.

Because this location is surrounded by mountains such as Mt. Chorogatake there is a big difference in temperature between day and night. According to the distillery, this temperature difference accelerates the aging process of the whiskey and is an irreplaceable step in the making of the whiskeys of the Kyoto Miyako Distillery.

In this product you will also encounter another ancient art from Kyoto, “Nishijin-Ori” is used as the label. And the label is used as an obi to create an elegant and beautiful design. This type of woven label comes from the Heian-Kyo era, more than 1200 years ago. Nishijin-ori in a generic term used for dyed yarn that is woven into high-quality products in Kyoto, and these are produced in large variety but small volumes. The fabric used feels very soft. This craftsmanship was developed in this region and is famous not only in Kyoto, but all over the world as a silky product that represents Japan.

Tasting note

Authentic bourbon-like whiskey that has matured in first-fill American oak barrels, after which carefully selected malt whiskeys have been blended and finished in bourbon barrels.
