Region: The Breede River is the lifeblood of the Robertson Valley and provides the necessary water supply. This valley is enclosed by the Langeberg in the north and the Sonderendberge in the south. Rain clouds are kept at bay by these mountains and the sun has complete freedom here. This makes the climate warm and subtropical and that is why this area is also known for its citrus fruit, peaches and apricots.
About the winery: In 1859, Koos de Wet left Stellenbosch after a huge row. In his wake, his brother's fiancée. That's right, she was the cause of the family quarrel, because Koos and she had secretly fallen in love. Koos succeeded in laying the foundation for the current Excelsior Estate in the fertile but dry Klein Karoo. The water from the nearby Breede River came in handy. This allowed Robertson to be transformed into a flourishing valley. The members of the De Wet family are the direct descendants of Jacobus de Wet, the first winemaker in South Africa.
Special features/remarks: The literal translation of 'purebred' is 'pure-bred' and that is what these wines are because the grapes come from the young vines of our own vineyards.
Tasting notes: Dark colored wine with an abundance of aromas and flavors of berries and cherries, complemented by soft tannins and some spices.
Serving suggestions: as a TV wine, mildly spiced meat and vegetable dishes, anything from the grill and hard cheese.
