The only native red grape variety of the province of Trapani. This grape variety has ancient origins, so much so that it got the name Pignatello because of its “pignate”. Pignate are pots made with the same red soil that showcases the best of Perricone. For many years this strain has been almost unused for winemaking, and now it is experiencing a period of new improvement and growth that has also led to this fine red wine.
Red ground
In the southwest of Sicily, where the color of the land evokes the red tones typical of Mediterranean sunsets, we find this type of soil. A soil consisting of sand and pebbles. With a very loose composition and full of ferrous microelements, the soil in the Belìce Valley is characterized by an arid microclimate perfect for the cultivation of red grape varieties. It is the favorite soil for Perricone: another name of the cultivar is Pignatello. Pignate is a Sicilian term referring to the pots made with the same red soil, to which the variety lends its maximum expression.
Remark
Wine estate Tenute Orestiadi was founded by a cooperative of winegrowers and the Orestiadi Foundation, a cultural institution that aims to promote the Sicilian indigenous grapes (and art). The name of the domain refers to Aeschylus' legend about Orestes and the Orestiadi. The vineyards are located around Gibellina, in the Belice valley near Trapani on the west side of Sicily. The warmth of the sun and the cool sea breeze create unique climatic conditions there. Indigenous grapes from various small zones with specific microclimates and terroir characteristics are processed through modern vinification technology and wine storage. This results in wines rich in character and elegance that reflect the great diversity of Sicily
